Enigma 2006 (Enigma Enhanced)
The Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade awarded Tecsidel, Vodafone and i2CAT a grant, within the framework of PROFIT grants, for the development of a scalable management architecture for the quality of service of MPLS (ENIGMA) networks. Tecsidel's experience in network management software development, together with Vodafone Spain’s business and engineering knowledge and i2CAT Foundation’s research and development activity, enabled cooperation between the three organizations to develop a scalable system for network service quality management (MPLS and QoS integration on IP networks - ENIGMA-) that is capable of using Diffserv policies to create, change, adapt and monitor LSPs (Labeled Switch Path) in order to ensure quality of service in IP communications. Systems of this nature are essential in QoS (Quality of Service) in third generation UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), and in other networks that have an MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switch)trunk structure and that require the configuration of several types of QoS, according to the nature of the traffic they carry.
The project for carrying out the system was awarded a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade with the framework of PROFIT grants. Thanks to our leadership in this project, Tecsidel will obtain elements that will allow us to build commercial solutions to resolve operation processes (provision, circuit configuration, service assurance, failure and alarm management, performance monitoring, system use counters) on LSP transmission circuits that supply the project's network.
Market interest in IP-centered network convergence and the software and hardware technology that implements them calls for solutions of this nature in order to manage the demand for service and the infrastructures used to meet the demand.
Vodafone Spain is part of the Vodafone Group, a leading global mobile company with presence in 27 countries and agreements with another 27 on all five continents. Vodafone's strategy includes voice, data and Internet-based services, with a view to take advantage of new developments in technology, such as GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and UMTS or 3G (third generation) to offer an increasingly broad range of services.
The i2CAT Foundation is a private, not-for-profit foundation for boosting research and innovation in the field of second generation Internet. It was founded by the Generalitat de Catalunya through the Telecomunicacions i Societat de la Informació Secretariat, together with the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC) and the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació –oundation. The Ramón Llull and Pompeu Fabra Universities also take part, as well as several public and private banks and companies.
